Here are a few take-aways:
- Highly concentrated areas lend themselves to DIY pizza tours by foot or bicycle.
- Flatbreads count as pizza in our book, as at Pastavino in Stapleton, Tommy’s Tavern at the Staten Island Mall, Dolce Fantasia in Charleston and Violette’s in Grant City.
- Bar pies aka personal pies only can be found at Panino Rustico in Huguenot and Grant City and Aunt Butchies of Richmond Valley.
- Island Social of Great Kills serves late-night pizza, after 10 p.m. only.
- The North Shore has great “Pepperoni Alley” potential where the New York slice takes centerstage, notably among Metro in West Brighton plus Port Richmond’s Gino’s and North Shore Pizzeria. Ungaro’s Coal Fired Pizza of the same neighborhood adds a charcoal-fired twist in the options.
- We see Great Kills has a great trio of close places that are ideal for a manageable walking food tour, notably, among Nonna’s, Village Maria and Mimmo’s. But the marina area up through Hylan Boulevard also offers a range of high-density deliciousness between Big Al’s, Goodfella’s and Reggiano’s II.
- Speaking of Reggiano’s, the Tottenville location closed on July 1.
- Rosebank lends itself to be the “Corridor of Crust” from Rosebank Pizza down to Pronto, or the other way around, with a total of five parlors to hit.
