Model Leomie Anderson has become the first black British model to become a Victoria’s Secret Angel. It took three attempts until she was picked to walk her first Victoria’s Secret show back in 2015. Leomie becomes the sixth black model to become an Angel since the spokesmodel spot was launched in 1997.

She took to Instagram to express her excitement for her new journey saying, “Mate, I’m still in shock...This is something I was even scared to dream about because I never thought it would come true but I am insanely excited to announce that I am Victoria’s Secret’s newest ANGEL!! I can’t believe it…”

Last year, Victoria’s Secret was under fire due to CEO Ed Razek’s inflammatory comments surrounding the exclusion of plus-size and transgender models. While the brand hasn’t made any efforts in those communities since the comments were made, appointing a black model to a coveted position such as the Angel will hopefully help push the conversation towards a better, more inclusive version of the brand.

Outside of her Victoria’s Secret endeavors, Anderson walks international runways and is the face of major makeup brands like Pat McGrath and Fenty Beauty. She started the intersectional feminist brand, LAPP to empower young women and girls around the world.

Hopefully, she’ll be able to promote her values of intersectionality as an Angel and help it to become a better, more inclusive brand.
