The 2022 Wimbledon women’s singles final features two players making their debut in a grand-slam decider and nerves are surely going to play a huge part as Elena Rybakina and Ons Jabeur do battle on Centre Court on Saturday (2pm, BST).

While Jabeur has made history for the Arab and African world by becoming the first woman from either region to reach a grand-slam final, Rybakina has also broken new ground as the first player from Kazakhstan to achieve the feat.

Whoever settles the better and adapts to the pressure of the situation will surely come out on top and two contrasting styles make for an intriguing final.

Jabeur is a sweet mover and a shot-maker with excellent variety to her game, while Rybakina is all about brute force and possesses a big serve and a devastating forehand.

The No 2 seed from Tunisia is the favourite at 8/13, with world No 23 Rybakina 13/10 in her bid to become the youngest Wimbledon champion since 21-year-old Petra Kvitova in 2011.

Lengthy battle in store

This is the biggest match of either player’s career so there are likely to be nerves and perhaps plenty of unforced errors, and backing a three-set encounter appeals.

Both completed meetings between this pair have gone the distance, with Rybakina winning 6-1 6-7 6-2 in Wuhan in 2019 and Jabeur exacting revenge in Dubai in March last year in a 7-6 4-6 6-2 victory.

Jabeur has a game well suited to grass and hasn’t lost on the surface since her quarter-final exit to Aryna Sabalenka at Wimbledon last year. She has now lost only two of her last 23 games on grass.

But big servers tend to prosper at Wimbledon so it is easy to see why Rybakina, who has sent down 47 aces over the last fortnight, has thrived at the All England Club and her semi-final win over former champion Simona Halep read particularly well.

This pair could easily cancel each other out, just as they have in their previous meetings, and the added pressure of the situation makes three sets look even more likely.

Jabeur’s experience to count

Although it may not be straightforward, world No 2 Jabeur deserves to be favourite for being the second-best player this year behind the dominant force that has been Iga Swiatek.

Jabeur claimed the biggest title of her career in May when winning the Madrid Open – a WTA 1000 event – and during her Wimbledon preparations she lifted more silverware on the grass of Berlin.

On the other hand Rybakina, who is four years younger than Jabeur, has not won a title since 2020 and six of her eight previous appearances in finals have ended in defeat.

However, the Tunisian has dropped sets in her last two Wimbledon assignments against Marie Bouzkova and Tatjana Maria before stamping her authority in a final-set decider.

Rybakina can start strongly

That makes a price of 3/1 about Jabeur winning in three sets look good value while a small interest should also be placed on the second seed coming from a set behind.

Rybakina has claimed the opening set in 13 of her previous 15 matches on the WTA Tour and three of her latest four defeats came in three sets, with her taking a lead on each occasion.
