Familiar foes can put on a show

Denmark, shock winners of Euro 1992, were semi-finalists three years ago, so they have a pedigree in this tournament and will be hoping to put that experience to good use against Slovenia.

The Slovenes are featuring at the European Championship for the first time since 2000 but they will have a strong understanding of the Danes, having also met them in qualifying for this summer’s spectacle in Germany.

The teams locked horns in the qualifying stage and finished with near-identical records in Group H, each collecting 22 points from seven wins, one draw and two defeats.

The Slovenes had a slightly better goal difference – +11 to Denmark’s +9 – but the Danes ended on top by virtue of their better head-to-head record.

The teams drew 1-1 in Slovenia last June before Denmark recorded a 2-1 victory on home soil in Copenhagen last November, and their latest encounter could be another profitable scenario for backers of both-teams-to-score.

The Slovenes have lost only two of their past 21 internationals. While they lack the tactical nous of Denmark in major competitions, they are an improving nation who should not be underestimated.

The Danes, meanwhile, are stacked with Bundesliga and Premier League talent and certainly warrant their status as favourites.

Both teams have scored in five of Slovenia’s past seven internationals and that has also happened in five of Denmark’s previous eight matches.

Marauding Maehle could showcase his talents

Some players perform better when representing their country and flying full back Joakim Maehle is certainly one of those.

He is given licence to bomb forward from his wing-back role and, although usually a right back, he tends to be deployed on the left by manager Kasper Hjulmand.

Backing the Wolfsburg man to score or assist is an appealing bet as he has 11 goals and seven assists in his 45 caps for the Danes.

Maehle was on the scoresheet as Denmark won 2-1 at home to Slovenia in November and he scored twice in five appearances at Euro 2020, so he looks a nice price to get on the scoresheet in what should be an entertaining game.

Goals and corners look likely

Despite being an opening game, this could be an entertaining affair with plenty of attacking quality on show.

Both teams scored in each meeting between the sides in qualifying and, with matches against England and Serbia to come, they will both be determined to start with a victory.

The corner counts in those qualifying contests were 10 and 12, and they can get to nine between them in Stuttgart, while we can add the adventurous Joakim Maehle to have two or more shots to our PickYourPunt wager with Betfred.
