Premier League top four: Maresca can lift Blues

Chelsea are the bookmakers’ choice to join last season’s top three in this season’s top four when the Premier League returns in mid-August.

The Blues are 11/8 in the betting – behind only Manchester City (1/10), Arsenal (2/9) and Liverpool (8/15) – with the odds-makers seemingly convinced that Enzo Maresca can succeed where Mauricio Pochettino failed last term, when Chelsea won their final five league matches to snatch sixth place.

A poor start, with just one win in August and September, cost Pochettino’s side, but had the season started on October 1, they would have finished fourth.

That position was filled by Aston Villa and Unai Emery’s side are 3/1 to make it back-to-back top-four finishes. The bookmakers have kept faith with City, Arsenal and Liverpool, even though the Reds will have to adjust to life after Jurgen Klopp, with Arne Slot taking over in the Anfield hot seat.

Tottenham Hotspur, who finished fifth in Ange Postecoglou’s first season in charge, are 2/1 to return to the top four in 2024-25.

They are joined on that mark by Newcastle United and Manchester United, who were seventh and eighth respectively last term. The Magpies will hope to avoid the injuries that ravaged their season, while fans of the Red Devils will hope new co-owners Ineos can spark a revival at Old Trafford.
