Home form fires Wolves’ hopes

Home is where the heart is for Wolves, who are unbeaten in eight league matches at Molineux. They will fancy their chances against an inconsistent United side who have won only two of their previous eight top-flight games and a win for Wolves would take them above the visitors.

Erik ten Hag’s side have taken just one point from their last four away league games, losing at Newcastle, West Ham and Nottingham Forest. They were extremely fortunate to draw 0-0 with Liverpool at Anfield, where they clung on despite losing the shot count 34 to six.

Despite fielding an almost full-strength XI, they were made to work hard in a 4-2 win at League Two side Newport in the fourth round of the FA Cup on Sunday. That suggests they could struggle against Gary O'Neil’s side, who have beaten Manchester City, Tottenham and Chelsea at home this season.

United limped to a 1-0 win in the reverse fixture at Old Trafford in August but it is worth recalling that Wolves edged the shot count 23-15 and were denied a late penalty for a challenge by United’s Andre Onana on Sasa Kalajdzic that PGMOL chief Howard Webb later admitted should have been reviewed.

Case for defences looks cast-iron

Ten of the previous 11 meetings between the side have produced two goals or fewer, the only exception being a 2-1 away win for the Red Devils in May 2021.

A similar scenario could pan out here with United desperate to improve upon their away form.

Six of United’s 10 away league games this term have rewarded backers of under 2.5 goals while five of their final six road outings last season featured two goals or fewer.

Three of Wolves’ last four matches in all competitions have gone under 2.5 goals too, so this could be more cagey than the prices suggest.

Shaw looks to have hands full

Luke Shaw returned from injury to play 82 minutes against Newport on Sunday and is expected to retain his place at left-back. However, he faces a challenging night against Pedro Neto, who has the pace and guile to draw fouls from his marker.

Shaw has been restricted to eight league starts for United this season but he has collected four cards in those games, including one in the reverse fixture in August.

Given their home form, Wolves should be backed to avoid defeat and the 6-1 bet builder can be completed with Matheus Cunha to register a shot on target.

The Brazilian has racked up 50 shots across his 21 league appearances this term and 25 of those have been on target, with six culminating in goals.
