Horse racing tips: Pontefract and Windsor – Monday July 1
Today’s horse racing picks are from Pontefract and Windsor

Flat racing holds sway across Britain today with four meetings across the afternoon and into the evening.

First off is Pontefract (2.10-4.45) before they go at Worcester (2.25-5.30), Wolverhampton (5.25-9.00) and Windsor (5.45-8.45).

Among our Monday fancies is one for trainer Micky Hammond, who farms amateur jockeys’ handicaps – and it looks like he has a nice sort set up for a race at the West Yorkshire course.

Horse racing tips: Pontefract, 2.10

Opening the card is the 1m 2f amateur jockeys’ handicap and last year’s winner Unplugged could be a warm order. Trained by Michael and David Easterby, who have won this race two years on the bounce, and ridden by Serena Brotherton, who has won three of the past four renewals of the contest, the eight-year-old gelding is likely to be a short price.

However, he could struggle to give FIFTYSHADESARESDEV a stone and a beating. Hammond is another trainer who farms these races and he has won this contest three times since 2012.

Becky Smith is a very capable rider and is also a multiple winner of this race, so there is no concern about her skill in the saddle.

Fiftyshadesaresdev, now on a lengthy streak of 21 career runs without a win, clearly comes with risks attached, but he went close when third here over a mile in April off a mark of 63 and is now 5lb lower in the weights.

He was a big eyecatcher over this trip at Newbury last time, outpaced in one part of the race, but was denied a run when making massive gains late on. He is a big player.

Horse racing tips: Pontefract, 3.45

The mile handicap for horses rated 0-85 is next on today’s punting agenda and there are a few unexposed types, such as Old Cock, Savvy Exchange and Aviemore, who have plenty of scope to improve with age.

However, we are siding with one of the more experienced horses in the field. David O’Meara’s BENNETOT must be of interest with the stable in top form.

Twice a winner when trained in France, this son of Ectot has yet to put his best foot forward in Britain, but he was given quite a soft ride by Daniel Tudhope at Ripon last time in a better race than this – and despite finishing seventh, he was only beaten by six lengths.

Bennetot made his stable debut in a tough 0-105 handicap at Haydock last September from a mark of 97 but he is falling in the weights and is running off 10lb lower here. O’Meara is a master of readying one for a handicap and it is only a matter of time before this horse gets his turn.

Selection: Bennetot @ 20/1 with BetMGM

Horse racing tips: Windsor, 7.15

Rohaan was sent off 4/1 for the Champions Sprint at Ascot in 2022 and is back down to his last winning mark, so any positive market signals for him would bode well for his chances.

But he needs a strong pace to aim at and it can be tricky to come from the rear to win at Windsor, so a chance is taken on WALLOP to smack his rivals.

Richard Hannon’s Harry Angel colt was prominent when scoring at Kempton over 6f in April last year. He clearly had his problems as he was off the track for a year and admittedly he has run poorly in two outings so far this term.

Nonetheless, a mark of 92 looks lenient and Hannon is having a terrific season. Wallop is lightly raced and if he gets it soft on the front end he will run a big race.

Selection: Wallop @ 8/1 with BetMGM
