The L'Oréal Young Scientist Centre at The Royal Institution is a lab where young people of all ages can get hands-on and experiment with science,” says the centre’s manager Jemma Naumann.

With eight workshops across chemistry, physics and biology – all designed for students to get first-hand experience – the partnership has been successfully running since 2009. “It gives young people the chance to become a scientist for the day,” says Royal Institution director Katherine Mathieson. “The equipment and facilities we have are excellent and super high-spec compared to what they’re used to.”

Established more than 10 years ago, the lab provides the opportunity to learn about everything from kinetic energy to circuit breaking to how to make a bathbomb, all the while providing an opportunity to present women in inspirational STEM roles.

“I love that I have a job where I can make a positive impact on people’s lives. I really enjoy experimenting with science and to share that love with people to start them on their own STEM journey – it’s one of the reasons I got into this career in the first place,” says Jemma.
