Tips to make the most of your Railcard savings

Sign up for a 3-year card

Anyone who knows they will travel via rail often for the foreseeable future should get a 3-year Railcard to save an extra £20. Instead of £30 a year for the 16-25, Family & Friends, Senior and Veterans Railcard, you will pay £70 for 3 years. 

Please note that the 16-17, 26-30, Network and Two Together Railcards are not eligible for this promotion.

Connect your Railcard to your Oyster or Trainline

Oyster Card

Visit any Oyster ticket shop or designated staff at the Tube, London Overground or Elizabeth Line to connect your Railcard to your Oyster card. Simply show your National Railcard and they will ensure your discount is applied to off-peak pay as you travel in London.

Trainline

Locate the edit or add a passenger section in your Trainline account and select ‘Loyalty and discount cards’. Once the Railcard is added to your account, it will automatically be available when booking your train ticket. You can also add Railcards for all your passengers when booking group travel.

Did you know that you’ll save the most money on your train ticket price by booking 12+ weeks in advance? By booking when tickets are first released, you can save 61%, on average.

Regional railcards

Do you live in Southeast England? Then we recommend the Network Railcard, which covers 16 different counties like Greater London, Exeter, Northampton and Kings Lynn. While it still costs £30 per year like other Railcards, it allows for you, up to 3 other adults and up to 4 children. No other Railcard allows for this amount of people under one single card.

How to use your Railcard discount

Visit National Rail and plan your journey. There, you can select the number and types of Railcards you wish to use. Click on the fare that you would like to purchase and get your digital tickets.

Railcards can also be used at a ticket office or from a ticket machine. Show the staff member your Railcard or enter your information at the ticket machine to have your discount applied.

Railcard eligibility

9 different Railcards exist and eligibility can be dependent on:

• Age: 16-17 Saver, 16-25 Railcard, 26-30 Railcard or Senior Railcard 
• Location: Network Railcard
• Number of People: Two Together Railcard or Family & Friends Railcard
• Miscellaneous: Veterans Railcard and Disabled Persons Railcard

Renewals

Your Railcard can be renewed up to 30 days before it expires. Just log in to ‘My Account’ on the Railcard website or App, and you’ll see a ‘renew’ button.
