The View’s Sunny Hostin chokes back tears recalling ‘nightmare’ pregnancy journey with her son Gabriel

Sunny said her husband 'refused' to have more kids, fearing they'd have the same troubles

THE VIEW'S Sunny Hostin has teared up while remembering her nightmare pregnancy with her son Gabriel.

Sunny, 55, is a mom to two kids, Gabriel, 21, and Paloma, 17, with her husband, Emmanuel, 52, but the journey to having them was far from easy.

The TV star opened up about her scary first pregnancy on Tuesday's installment of The View: Behind the Table podcast with the show's executive producer, Brian Teta.

It started when Brian read a listener's question about the most pivotal moment in Sunny's life, to which she immediately reflected on her pregnancy.

"I wanted to be a mother more than anything, and we had to go through several series of IVF (invitro-fertilization), and I had to have several surgeries. I had like 26 fibroids removed," the talk show host recalled.

"It was just a nightmare, and I started losing faith, and I didn't think that was anything that would ever happen to me.

"Now I'm getting emotional. And I finally got pregnant with Gabriel," she said, choking back tears.

Sunny then revealed that things didn't go smooth sailing during her pregnancy as she suffered some scary complications.

"At the third-month mark, after we'd told everyone, I get a torn placenta. And I'm rushed to the hospital, and they tell me that the baby's not gonna make it. And I just told everyone that I know that it's finally gonna happen," the TV personality shared.

Sunny then said her doctor informed them the baby had only a 25 percent chance of survival and she needed to go on bed rest for a fighting chance.

"I said, 'And what does one do to make that happen?' He said, 'It would be complete bed rest, including not being able to get up to go to the bathroom. You'd have a bedpan for the next six months.' And that's what I did. I fell into a deep depression. I gained 70 pounds," she confessed.

ANSWERED PRAYERS

The View host revealed that her mental health struggles worsened, and she had a "nervous breakdown" when her mother-in-law brought home baby clothes, fearing that her baby would die.

Sunny explained that through prayer and the help of a family friend, a nun, who helped raise her, she got through the rest of her pregnancy and gave birth to Gabriel.

She noted that Gabriel was expected to be born with developmental delays, but he defied the odds and is now a third-year student at Harvard University.

A few years later, Sunny went on to have her daughter, Paloma, who was also conceived via IVF and experienced no health issues.

The lawyer added she wanted to have a third child, but Emmanuel "refused" to see her go through another difficult pregnancy.

SCARY INJURY

Sunny has talked about her children quite a bit on the podcast.

In September, she revealed Gabriel was in a terrifying skateboard accident that landed him in the emergency room with serious injuries.

The college student collided with a car while riding his electric skateboard around Cambridge, Massachusetts, badly injuring his shoulder.

"Because he was not wearing the helmet that I bought for him, the only way to kind of protect his head was to land on his right shoulder, which he dislocated and we believe is somewhat fractured," the worried mom told listeners.

Sunny said that her son was recovering and had to wear a sling for four to six weeks.
