Sainsbury’s are praised for ‘making a Christmas dinner accessible to all’ as they reduce veg to just 19p a pack

Potatoes and carrots are also included in the deal

PREPPING a Christmas dinner can be an expensive job.

With joints of meat at sky-high prices thanks to the cost of living prices, everyone's looking for other ways to keep the cost of the meal down.

So it comes as no surprise that Sainsbury's decision to reduce their Christmas veg staples in time for the big day has been met with praise by shoppers.

Laura took to the Extreme Couponing and Bargains UK group on Facebook to share a screenshot, which showed that 500g bags of parsnips and Brussel sprouts had been reduced to 19p each with a Nectar card.

"Well done Sainsbury’s for making a Christmas dinner accessible for all," Laura wrote in her post.

You can also get a 2kg bag of potatoes for 15p, and a 1kg bag of carrots for 19p.

The prices will be applied between 19th to 24th December in store, and to online orders delivered between 20th and 24th December.

In addition, all the proceeds from the festive vegetables included in the deal - potatoes, brussels, carrots and parsnips - will be donated to the Nourish the Nation programme in partnership with Comic Relief.

"By ensuring communities have improved access to balanced, nutritional, and sustainable food sources, the Nourish the Nation programme helps to tackle food poverty by supporting those most in need, whilst also supporting those at risk in the longer term," Sainsbury's write on their website.

However, in the comments section of Laura's post, many people raged about the fact that the price offers were only available if you have a Nectar card.

"I absolutely disagree with Sainsbury's doing these as nectar prices!" one wrote.

"So many older and vulnerable people not doing nectar cards could do with getting cheap veg like they have for many years.

"Shame on Sainsbury's putting a clause in on getting this offer.

"Come Christmas eve they will be giving this stuff away free!"

"I'll stick to Aldi, no hoops to jump through and everything is cheaper and better quality," another added.

But someone else hit back, writing: "Can’t believe people are moaning about Nectar cards.

"It’s a rewards program and you’re getting rewarded with cheaper prices for joining.. and it’s free.

"If you don’t want one don’t have one but if it’s data you’re claiming to be worried about, get off Facebook & bin your smart phones first because they collect a lot more than Nectar does."

"Why don't people want a Nectar card? You literally get the choice......" another mused.

"1. Sign up to Nectar card, get Nectar card points/offers.

"2. Don't sign up to Nectar card don't get offers or points.

"3. Shop elsewhere."

Responding to the backlash her post had prompted, Laura then returned to the comments to add: "This is a site to help others, especially those who may otherwise struggle financially.

"This post wasn’t a political post or one to create upset, just one to help out at the hardest of times for many.

"Let’s be kind, it is that time of year after all!"
