BOOZY Brits could find beer prices as low as 50p when heading to Spain after the coronavirus pandemic.

As the country begins to ease their lockdown, the cheap prices hope to entice tourists to bars and restaurants when they return to Spain.

Alcohol supplier Derek Payne told Euro News Weekly that alcohol prices could be as low as supermarket prices to encourage tourists to drink at local establishments.

He explained: "Busier bars with larger turnovers have been selling beer at low cut prices for some time, and it’s realistic to think they will have offers, like a pint for €1 or as low as 64 cents (50p)."

Ian Pratt, who runs a local business in Benidorm, added: "If you can go out for a drink for the same price as drinking at home, why wouldn’t you?"

Bars and restaurants are already expecting huge losses - with an estimated 100 million litres of beer going to waste in the following months.

Spain has some of the cheapest beer in the world, with tourists previously able to buy a bottle for under £2.

A study by the Post Office, which revealed the cheapest prices to be in Bulgaria with average costs of 72p, found prices in Majorca were around £3 while Ibiza was cheaper at £2.73.

Before coronavirus, many popular tourist hotspots cracked down on anti-social behaviour caused by alcohol, with cheap deals enticing British tourists.

The new laws, introduced earlier this year, included a ban on happy hour deals, while party boats could not advertise or dock in the area.

Shops were forced to stop selling alcohol after 8:30pm, while alcohol vending machines and booze adverts including pub crawls could no longer be advertised.

Since then, the tourist industry has been decimated across the country with hotels facing bankruptcy and the tour operators warning recovery could take years.

This hasn't stopped tourists who are still on holiday in Spain flouting the lockdown - last month, drunk Brits in Benidorm dismissed the deadly coronavirus as "just the flu".

Angry police were filmed clearing streets and pubs as the determined partygoers ignored Spain’s Covid-19 quarantine.

Authorities were forced to issue stark warnings of prison time and massive £25,000 fines for tourists caught breaking the rules.

Despite the country easing some of their lockdown guidelines, as some workers are allowed to return to their jobs, Spain is unlikely to recover quickly.

Tourism leaders have explained that holiday-makers will have to sunbathe 6ft apart on beaches even after the end of the coronavirus crisis.

Once the physical barriers on the seafront promenades are removed, Minister of Tourism, Reyes Maroto, says tourists will still have to keep their distance for a while, not just within the resorts and hotels but on the beaches as well.
