While both the jobs are professional IT roles which are closely related - and in many firms, work side-by-side; they are different and distinct.

A system engineer’s role is to create, build and improve IT systems, whereas a systems administrator ensures an organization’s computer systems are functioning properly and meeting the needs of the users.

The average compensation for a systems administrator is $84,939 per year while a systems engineer earns more with an average of $111,239 per year.

What qualifications would I need to become a system engineer or a system administrator? 

A systems engineering role is a highly responsible one and requires significant study.

As well as a bachelor’s degree in a related technical field, such as computer science or computer engineering, most senior grade positions will ask for a master’s degree too.

For the highest-paying roles, you will be expected to have several years of quality work experience and knowledge of systems architecture, information security, systems engineering and integration.

Becoming a systems administrator is a little easier.

While it can certainly be helpful to have a degree in computer science or a similar field, jobs are usually open to individuals who can demonstrate technical proficiency, an aptitude for problem-solving plus hands-on experience.
