A SPEED demon EV brand has unveiled the fastest electric car in history in the form of a new supercar that can hit 60mph in the bling of an eye.

The ultra-rapid model is even quicker than its record-breaking sibling and can even go toe to toe with some of the fastest petrol cars out there.

Croatian manufacturer Rimac burst onto the scene with its Concept One supercar back in 2011, shattering track times and clocking 221mph at the top end.

This was followed by the 227mph Concept S before the brand's crown jewel - the Nevera - arrived in 2018.

The electric hypercar took the title as the fastest battery-powered vehicle in the world, with a top speed of 258mph.

Now Rimac, which is owned by the same company as speed record rival Bugatti, has released the Nevera R, which it promises will deliver even more pace.

While it won't exceed its predecessor's 256mph limit, it will be able to get there faster, securing the title as the fastest-accelerating EV in the world.

The R has been dubbed the "alter-ego" of the standard Nevera but could equally be called its evil twin with face-melting power rating of 2078 horsepower compared to the normal version's 1888.

That is only surpassed by the hybrid Koenigsegg Gemera, which features 2268 horsepower.

However, the Koenigsegg won't be able to equal its 0-62mph time of just 1.81 seconds.

It can then reach 186mph from a standing start in 8.66 seconds, which is about the same time it takes the average family car to hit 60.

Amazingly, the R is fully road legal and can match up with all but the very fastest petrol cars too.

Only four cars currently sit above it in the league table, including the Bugatti Chiron Supersport 300+, which can hit 304mph.

Mate Rimac, the firm's CEO, told Autocar: "We’re relentlessly tweaking to customers’ desires and many were looking for a car that really emphasised the Nevera’s cornering ability, using all the advanced technology on board.

"We responded with the Nevera R: all the DNA of the record-breaking Nevera, but lighter, faster and more focused."

Only 40 R models will be produced, in addition to the 150 standard Neveras - which the brand confirms still haven't sold out.

The new model will have a base price of £1.97 million before adding any of the hundreds of personalisation options.

It comes after the man who designed the world's most iconic sports car revealed that he wants to make it smaller.
