Jet2 confirmed it was diverted to Cork Airport in Ireland as the passenger required "medical attention".

A spokesperson told The Sun Online: "Regrettably, we can confirm that the customer sadly passed away, despite the best efforts of our highly-trained crew who intervened as soon as they became aware.

"This was an extremely difficult situation for our crew and we would like to thank them for their efforts.

"Our thoughts are with the customer's family and friends at this very difficult time."

One holidaymaker told the Mirror the passenger was a male and was discovered dead in the plane toilet.

He had reportedly been travelling alone at the time, with everyone on board left upset by the "tragic circumstances".

The passenger added: "My husband reported someone had been in toilet a long time and he thought he was dead. Tragically he was right.

"We should have landed Manchester 8.30pm with diversion to Cork and awaiting another plane from Cork to Manchester got into Manchester at around 1.30am."

In October, a man died on a Jet2 flight as it was preparing to travel back to the UK from Spain.

It came just months after a woman died on another flight from Tenerife to Spain.
