Co-host Alyssa Farah Griffin asked Maddow if Democrats should have a backup for Biden after losing to former President Donald Trump in key battleground states, according to recent polls.

"I think the backup plan is run a better campaign," said Maddow, adding that Biden has a "strong" record as president.

"We are the economic envy of the world. Doesn't mean our economy is perfect but we are literally the envy of the world."

Maddow continued, saying that the US has seen unemployment rates that haven't been seen "in generations" and economic growth that any major country "would kill for."

Joy Behar chimed in, saying that voters aren't receiving that information but Maddow said that it doesn't make it untrue.

"Biden hasn't been disqualified from the presidency by anything having to do with his performance," she said.

"It's just that it's gonna be a tough fight and so I think the backup plan is fight harder."

'IMMORTAL WORDS'

Maddow was also quick to share that she wasn't looking forward to the upcoming debate between Biden and Trump.

Sara Haines asked if there was even a point for the debate to happen after detailing what she believes could go wrong with Trump were to win a second term.

"Do you know the philosopher, Mr. T?" Maddow asked after a brief pause.

"In the immortal words of Mr. T, I pity the fool. I mean, who wants to participate in that debate? Neither of these men.

"Who wants to moderate this debate? Nobody. Who wants to watch this debate? We’ll see! I mean, there’s no upside here for anybody."

Behar said, however, that voters still "need to watch it," which Maddow agreed.

Maddow called Biden a "fixed variable" in the presidential race, dismissing any "fantasies" about him being replaced from the election ballot.

"There’s no reason I think for there to be this fantasy that Biden not the president and Biden isn’t the nominee," she said.

"He is and he’s going to be and that’s a fixed variable."
