"I was just out wading in the water about chest deep and out of nowhere, I just felt what felt like a shark," Tyler told local NBC affiliate WYFF-TV.

"It put its whole mouth around my foot and clamped down."

Tyler managed to escape the shark and his girlfriend, Hailey Matejcik, rushed to his side.

"He came up out of the water and I met him out there. I looked down and his foot just has blood everywhere," Hailey told WYFF.

Tyler said he had been in the water for hours before the attack and he wasn't the only one enjoying the waves.

"Just chilling," he recalled.

"I guess I was the lucky bite recipient," Tyler added.

The attack was the second shark injury of the month in Hilton Head, WYFF reported.

Gruesome footage of the attack revealed his foot covered in stitches after the shark chomped down on it.

SHARK RAMPAGE

The shark attacks in Hilton Head are the latest in a slew of injuries across the nation.

A swimmer on South Padre Island in Texas was rushed to the hospital on July 4.

The victim, a mother named Sullivent, lost her left calf in the attack.

“And had I not pulled my legs up, it probably would've got my torso or something else," she recalled to NBC affiliate KXAS-TV.

A teenager in Florida also suffered an injury from a shark attack while swimming off Flagler Beach near Daytona.

He was bitten in his right calf but swam away with minimal injuries.

The Florida coast is ridden with shark attacks as New Smyrna Beach, just south of Daytona, was recently dubbed the "shark capital of the world."

Shark attacks in 2023

In 2023, there were 79 shark bites globally.

Of that number, 69 were unprovoked and 10 were provoked fatal bites.

The United States had 36 unprovoked attacks which accounted for 52% of the incidents worldwide.

Two of the attacks, one in California and the other in Hawaii, were fatal.

Consistently, Florida has had the most attacks in the country with 2023 being no different. The Sunshine State had 16 attacks last year.

Three of the 10 fatalities in 2023 happened in a remote surfing spot off the coast of southern Australia known as The Eyre Peninsula.

The area is home to seals, so they lure in great whites.

The other five fatal attacks were spread out across the globe with one in the Bahamas, Egypt, Mexico, and New Caledonia.

According to Florida Museum's International Shark Attack File

The beach received a danger score of 8.4 out of 10 by Travel Lens in 2023.

Nationwide, the Florida Museum of National History's International Shark Attack File investigated 120 interactions last year between sharks and humans.

Of those interactions, 69 were unprovoked bites, meaning the attack occurred in the shark's natural habitat, while 22 were provoked interactions by humans.
