The problem for Boris Johnson is the public wants and expects better from his government

Roasted Coffey

PITY poor Therese Coffey — sent out yesterday to defend the indefensible.

The Work and Pensions Secretary’s loyal attempts on the airwaves to shore up her boss were painful to watch, and couldn’t disguise the obvious.

The Chris Pincher debacle is of the PM and No10’s own making. Pincher’s predilections were widely spoken of in Westminster.

Allies and backbenchers repeatedly warned against his appointment as Deputy Chief Whip.

Boris himself is now said to have joked he was known as “Pincher by name . . .”

That he was then given the job of handling sexual harassment complaints in the Commons is jaw-dropping.

For Downing Street to then launch an ill-advised strategy on Friday to claim the PM hadn’t known about any “specific” allegations against Pincher only made matters worse.

Pincher — now receiving professional medical help — was always an accident waiting to happen.

The problem for Boris – as a cost of living crisis rages – is the public wants and expects better from his government.

Return to centre

WHILE the Government lurches from one self-inflicted stupidity to another, a man waits in the wings to seize his opportunity.

Not that terminal dud Sir Keir Starmer, of course. Rather, Tony Blair who, at 69, still refuses to give up on his self-created image as a man of current power and influence.

Taking advantage of Tory woes and Labour weakness and seeking to be the figurehead of a new Macron-style “Centrist” movement, Blair is back.

His aims boil down to two things: Ditching first past the post elections for proportional representation and overturning Brexit.

That the British people want neither simply doesn’t come into it.
It’s all about restoring Blair’s reputation – and destroying the Tories forever.

Whitehall bias

ALSO hell-bent on overturning Brexit is the army of Remoaner civil servants at the heart of Government.

Attorney General Suella Braverman has revealed her battles with pro-EU officials trying to thwart policy. Like Blair, they believe theyare above something as trivial as the will of the people.

Like the equivalent of the old trade unions – they risk being seen as the new enemy within.
