Cops arrested a man in his 20s on suspicion of assault at the time.

Bedfordshire Police today confirmed a 28-year-old man has been charged with a public order offence.

He is due to appear before Luton Magistrates' Court on January 9.

Officers believe the egg was thrown in the direction of His Majesty at St George's Square.

King Charles, 74, was shaking hands with members of the public when he was temporarily steered away by his security staff.

In a statement, the force said: "A 28-year-old man has been charged in relation to an incident which occurred during His Majesty King Charles III's visit to Luton yesterday.

"The man was charged under section five of the Public Order Act and has been bailed."

The monarch was in the area for a series of visits, including to the town hall and the newly-built Guru Nanak Gurdwara.

The King, who had a plaster on his left thumb, removed his shoes and put on a Ramaal head covering in the Sikh temple.

He bowed in front of the holy book Guru Granth Sahib and sat cross-legged on the floor, wearing an orange scarf over his suit.

The Head of State was then invited to unveil a plaque to mark the official opening of the Gurdwara.
