The incident happened just before 1pm with police patrols and ambulances arriving at the scene in the area of Munktellarenan.

There is a large police operation in the area and the crime scene has been cordoned off, according to local media.

It was initially reported the attack happened at a school in the area but the principal clarified the incident involved the school's students who were in a different place.

Police are searching for one or more suspects with drones and dog patrols.

Swedish cops said they were called to the scene at 12.45 following reports of a serious crime.

Police spokesperson Dennis Strömberg Johansson said: "At the moment, several police patrols are in the vicinity of Munktellarenan, which is supposed to be the scene of the crime

"Barriers have been set up.

"It must be an assault with at least one motive. The crime classification is attempted murder."

He added that at least three people have been taken to the hospital but there is no information regarding their injuries.

He said no one has been arrested so far as forensic technicians are heading to the scene.

He told TV4 Nyheterna: "It is true that a serious crime is taking place, but in any case there is no shooting," adding that "some kind of sharp object has been used."

The school's principal said: "We know very little at the moment."

An eyewitness named Fredrik told Aftonbladet how he watched the "full-on fight" from his window.

He said: "It was some kind of settlement, they fought each other. They were 20 against 20 who smoked together.

"I saw two who were completely stabbed."
