As groups of families tried to peacefully enjoy their food, chaos was sparked with one passenger grabbing tongs from the buffet to use as a weapon.

The thug, who had cuts to his cheek, pointed and jabbed them at another male who had his fists up.

As blood splattered on the floor terrified holidaymakers ran from the scrap.

One woman was seen latched onto a man's hair trying to drag him to the ground as chefs and ferry employees tried to break it up.

The vessel had just departed when the problem was sparked.

It was ordered to turn back to Dublin before setting off again over two hours later.

It is not yet known why the disagreement erupted but cops are investigating.

An Irish Ferries spokesperson said: "Irish Ferries can confirm that there was a public order issue on board yesterday's 13.50 DUBLIN SWIFT sailing from Dublin to Holyhead shortly after departure.

"Irish Ferries places the highest importance on safety and therefore decided to immediately return to Dublin port, where the Irish authorities dealt with the incident.

"The ship resumed sailing at 15.52.

"Irish Ferries apologises to passengers whose travel was disrupted by this issue and continues to assist the authorities who are investigating the incident."

It comes just one week after a traveller stabbed another man on a BA flight to St Lucia.

The man smashed a glass bottle in the galley before plunging the broken shards into another flyer in a horrifying rage 30,000ft in the air.
