The cyclists were racing down a dusty dirt track in Bakersfield, California, for the Bianchi Rock Cobbler race right in the wild animal's path.

Rider Tony Inderbitzin has said he is "extremely sore" after his bike is flipped over by the animal, and a second attack sees him hurled up into the air.

“I’ve never been this sore. Initially, right after the attack, my neck was killing me. That was the focal point of the soreness, now it’s the lower back," he says.

Before the brutal attack, a first cyclist flies down the path narrowly missing the bull, potentially aggravating it and causing it to go full force on the next passing rider.

"I had maybe a second to brace myself or do anything.

"As I was on my hands and knees trying to get back up, he circled around and came up with his head underneath my head and chest and flicked me up in the air,” Inderbitzin told Fox 26.

And on the Rock Cobbler website, the course is described as "a stupidly hard ride bordering on a race" and was created by a "drunken madman."

The course is 6,500 feet high and cattle are often seen grazing on the plains.

Inderbitzin did not finish the race and two other cyclists were also attacked by the angry bull.

Sam Ames, the 'chief excitement officer' of the Rock Cobbler, said those who got "tangled up with that bull" were fine in an Instagram post

"Everybody had a good laugh and thank God it wasn't worse.

"From the bottom of my heart I thank everyone who comes out to play bikes with us."
