KIKE Hernandez produced one of the most awkward moments of the MLB season while on the mic.

The Los Angeles Dodgers third baseman was speaking to the AppleTV+ commentators during a 2-1 win over the New York Yankees.

Hernandez, 32, was about the Dodgers' strong team chemistry by former MLB pitcher Dontrelle Willis.

"After this play," Hernandez said, before moving right to field a grounder from Gleyber Torres.

Unfortunately, he failed to scoop up the ball and allowed the Yankees hitter to reach first base.

"Kike Hernandez making an error while mic’d up is making for some really awkward TV," posted a fan on X.

"Kike Hernandez will probably never get mic'd up ever again," added another while sharing a clip of the incident.

"The time period after a player makes an error while mic’d up and the commentators don’t know what to say might be the most awkward couple minutes in human history," said a third.

"Maybe a little bit, but I think I let the ball eat me up. It had a weird hop," Hernandez said when asked if being interviewed distracted him.

"No, because we're getting paid," he added when asked if he would refuse to be mic'd up again. "I like money."

In the regular season, MLB's collective bargaining agreement sees a player receive a $10,000 stipend for wearing a microphone for at least one inning.

That rises to $15,000 in the postseason.

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said he was not aware Hernandez was on the mic.

"What was the previous question, before I made that error?" Hernandez asked after around a minute.

"I don't want to ask it again, because I don't want you to boot the ball again, to be honest with you," Willis replied.

"I'll take that E for you, big dog."

The Dodgers won despite Hernandez's error to take their record to 40-25.

Five key MLB rule changes in 2024

1. The pitch clock is reduced from 20 to 18 seconds with runners on base. It will remain at 15 seconds with bases empty.

2. When a pitching change is made, the innings timer will reset to 2:00 rather than 2:15 like it did last year.

3. Teams will only be allowed four mound visits per game in 2024, down from five last season.

4. Fielders and defenders blocking bases will be called for obstruction by referees.

5. The runners' lane from home plate to first base has been widened to include the dirt between the grass and the white line.

They face the Yankees again tonight with New York sweating over Juan Soto after a mid-game exit.

Manager Aaron Boone said Soto is "day-to-day" after missing the series opener yesterday.

Testing on superstar Soto's left forearm and elbow revealed no structural damage.

"It was what I was looking for," Soto said after the loss to the Dodgers.

"Just trying to see what was really going on in my elbow, and we were having a little bit of thinking of what it was going to be like and how it was going to come out.

"And thank God it came out our way."
