BARRY Sanders experienced a heart-related health scare last weekend.

The NFL icon, 55, confirmed the news in a social media statement yesterday.

"Over Father's Day weekend, I experienced a health scare related to my heart," he wrote.

"It was unexpected and served as a reminder of the importance of staying vigilant about our physical well-being, even when we are feeling fine.

"I am grateful for the amazing doctors, nurses and other healthcare professionals for providing me with needed care.

"My family and I are thankful for your prayers and support during this time.

"Per my doctors' recommendation, I am taking this opportunity to prioritize my health and well-being.

"I appreciate your understanding and continued support."

"Get well Barry, we want to see Detroit win a title while you're here," a fan commented on Sanders' post.

"Detroit loves you Barry," added another.

"Love you Barry get better soon," a third wrote.

A fourth said: "Love you, Barry! Praying for a speedy recovery."

The Detroit Lions wished Sanders a speedy recovery on X.

A six-time All-Pro, he starred for the Lions from 1989 to 1998 before retiring aged 31.

Sanders is fourth on the NFL's career rushing list with 15,269 yards in just 10 seasons.

He ran for 2,053 yards in 1997 as he was crowned MVP and was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2004.

The Lions drafted Sanders with the No. 3 overall pick in the 1989 NFL Draft.

He spent his entire career in Detroit and a statue was unveiled outside Ford Field last year.

Sanders appeared at this year's Draft which was held in Detroit.

The NFL has signed off changes to its injured reserve rules ahead of the new season.
