‘Grow a spine, man’ rages New York Mets broadcaster after fan at Wrigley Field caves to ‘too much peer pressure’

A NEW York Mets fan at a road game was roasted by commentators after his controversial decision.
The Mets supporter was in the bleachers at Wrigley Field in Chicago, Illinois.

He was watching the New York side take on the Chicago Cubs at one of America's most iconic ballparks.
The baseball spectator's moment in the spotlight came in the top of the fifth inning.
New York trailed 6-0 when Francisco Alvarez stepped up to the plate.
He crunched a home run into the left field bleachers, where it was caught by the fan.

But, after a few moments, the supporter threw the home run ball back onto the field.
Steve Gelbs and Ron Darling were calling the game for SNY on the Mets' version of the broadcast.
"Wow, they made him throw a back," a stunned Gelbs said.
"You know what, that is too much peer pressure.

"Obviously not a leader," Darling added.

Cubs fans in the bleachers at Wrigley Field stick to the tradition of throwing back home runs from opposing players.
That means fans of the road team face a dilemma should they catch one.
They can throw the ball back and endear themselves to the rest of the bleachers.
Or they can keep the ball as a treasured souvenir but upset the locals.
Fans saw the clip circulate on social media and were also livid with the spectator's decision.

"Gelbs destroying him," one commented. "Sensational stuff."
"Ban him from Citi Field," another suggested.
"He must be an imposter in Mets clothing," wrote a third.
The Mets recently went on a remarkable seven-game win streak inspired by a new mascot.

Grimace threw out the first pitch at Citi Field earlier this month which led to a stunning winning run.
The Mets entered Sunday's game against the Cubs with a 36-39 record in 2024.
