THE HOUSTON Texans have handed a career lifeline to running back Cam Akers.

Akers, a past Super Bowl winner with the Los Angeles Rams, saw his 2023 season with the Minnesota Vikings ruined by an Achilles injury.

But now he's back in action and joins a running back room in Houston led by 2021 Pro Bowler Joe Mixon.

Dameon Pierce is on the roster too, and with Akers now on board the Texans have some serious depth in that position.

Akers has enjoyed a rollercoaster career so far, with the ultimate NFL high combining with some genuine lows, many of them to do with injuries.

He was selected by the Los Angeles Rams in the second round, 52nd overall, in the 2020 NFL Draft.

His rookie season was dominated by the Covid-19 pandemic, with many of the games held behind closed doors.

Akers had 145 carries for 625 yards, and scored three touchdowns, in 13 games.

An Achilles injury then restricted him to just one appearance in the regular season in 2021.

But he bounced back to produce a series of superb performances in early 2022 as the Rams claimed Super Bowl glory in their own stadium.

He had 67 carries for 172 yards in the postseason, as the Rams made it to the biggest game of all.

Akers started the Super Bowl against the Cincinnati Bengals, which ended in a 23-20 win for the Rams.

His standout season came in 2022, when he had 188 carries for 786 yards, with 11 touchdowns.

But then came another season unfortunately wrecked by injury for Akers in 2023.

It started with the Rams and then transferred after a few weeks to Minneapolis when the Vikings signed him last September.

Now comes a new chance for Akers, and with the Texans building a formidable team it could be one to remember.

The Texans begin their 2024 campaign against the Indianapolis Colts on September 5th.

Texans head Coach DeMeco Ryans has called on the team's fans to make a difference when the new campaign kicks off.

"With fans being in early, being loud when we're in the stadium, it's a really unique and really cool atmosphere, especially playing here in NRG Stadium," Ryans said.

"When it's packed and it's loud, I just think back to our playoff game versus the Cleveland Browns here.

"It provides them with more juice, more energy to go out and execute their job."
