NFL star who’s earned $30m during career wakes up unemployed after announcing shock retirement at age 28

The NFL player left the Cowboys in March with three years left on his $57.5 million deal

LAS Vegas Raiders wide receiver Michael Gallup has retired from the NFL after six seasons.

The 28-year-old wideout announced he would quit the sport the day before the Raiders' first training camp of the summer.

Gallup penned a one-year contract worth $3 million with the organization in late April.

He has since participated in OTAs and mini-camp with Las Vegas where he was expected to compete for the WR3 role.

Gallup was unexpectedly placed on the reserve/retired list by the Raiders on Tuesday, per a roster update on X.

The former Dallas Cowboys star didn't publicly address the reason for his retirement.

Disappointed fans were stunned to see their new wide receiver quit football before taking a single snap in a Raiders uniform.

"Aaaand season is over just like that," wrote one disgruntled Raider fan on X.

"Gallup retired on us before playing a snap," wrote another, adding a broken heart emoji.

"Michael Galluping off into the sunset," laughed a third.

"3-14 incoming," sighed a fourth.

Gallup was a third-round pick out of Colorado State for the Cowboys in 2018.

He started eight games in his rookie season, taking 33 receptions for 507 yards and two touchdowns as Dallas reached the Divisional round of the playoffs.

The Atlanta native put up career numbers a year later, recording his first and only 1,000-receiving season.

He remained a reliable member of quarterback Dak Prescott's receiving corp, despite a torn ACL in 2021.

Gallup penned a five-year, $57.5 million contract in 2022, but his production dried up after the emergence of CeeDee Lamb.

The Cowboys released Gallup in March in a bid to save cap space, with the receiver still having three years left on his deal.

He retires from the NFL having tallied 266 catches for 3,744 yards and 21 touchdowns.

In total, he earned $29,996,693 during his time in the NFL, per Spotrac.

Following Gallup's retirement, the Raiders are looking short in the receiver positions.

Star wideouts Davante Adams and Jakobi Meyers are currently shadowed by Tre Tucker, Jalen Guyton, and Kristian Wilkerson.
