San Francisco 49ers facing another contract crisis ahead of new season as Trent Williams holds out of training camp

Williams will be fined a hefty amount for each training camp practice he misses

San Francisco missed two players at their first training camp practice on Wednesday.

Aiyuk was only seen in the facility and didn't practice, which is called a hold-in.

However, Williams didn't report for camp and is holding out because of problems with his contract, 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan told reporters.

"It was something I knew could be a possibility, and I was hoping that he would be here," Shanahan said on Wednesday, per ESPN.

"But I knew it could be a possibility, and I felt pretty confident it'll all work out in the long run and he'll be here and we'll get on the same page with everything.

"But it's just one day of practice, and I think Trent will be all right missing a few practices."

On Thursday, the 49ers signed wide receiver Malik Turner and placed Williams on the reserve/did not report list on Thursday.

The 36-year-old will now be subject to a $50,000 fine each day he doesn't report to training camp.

Williams is under contract through the 2026 season.

He signed a six-year, $136 million contract extension with San Francisco in 2021.

Williams will be paid the most money for an offensive lineman in 2024, earning close to $31.6 million, per Over The Cap.

The veteran may be seeking guarantees in his deal as the 49ers can drop his contract in each of the years left on his current contract.

Williams is regarded as one of the best offensive linemen in the NFL.

He has been an All-Pro in the last three seasons.

Williams' contract situation comes during a contract dispute between San Francisco and the 2023 Second-team All-Pro wideout Aiyuk.

The 26-year-old is entering the final year of his rookie contract and has been seeking a contract extension throughout the offseason.

After requesting a trade last week, Aiyuk reported to training camp on Tuesday.

He watched practice on the sidelines while wearing shorts and a T-shirt.

Aiyuk was not subject to fines due to "holding in."
