Yee, 26, had maintained a good position throughout the event but had fallen 15 seconds behind Wilde in the final 2500m.

However, he was able to summon everything he had left in the final stretch to fly past his rival and snatch gold.

BBC commentator Matt Chilton, 61, was left stunned as they said: "What a run from Alex Yee.

"Wilde can't believe it, he has watched Yee go past him and off into the distance.

"He was kidding us all along.

"He knew what he was doing all along and he has broken Wilde."

Yee completed the swimming section of the triathlon in 18th place and gained more ground during the 40km cycling section.

He and team-mate Sam Dickinson were 4th and 1st in the race as they started the 10km run.
