Gathings has a hamstring injury and if the tight end goes unclaimed, he'll become a free agent rather than landing on the Chiefs' injured reserve list.

It is reported that Gathings picked up his hamstring injury earlier this week.

In a corresponding move, Kansas City have signed tight end Geor'quarius Spivey.

Gathings has yet to play a regular season game in his career.

Excitement is starting to build in Kansas City as the Chiefs step up their preparations for the new season.

Andy Reid's team begin their campaign in the season opener next month.

The Chiefs will take on the Baltimore Ravens on September 5th.

They will also play the Cincinnati Bengals, Atlanta Falcons and Los Angeles Chargers in the opening weeks of the season.

With their iconic quarterback Patrick Mahomes, the Chiefs will be aiming to be the first team in NFL history to win their third Super Bowl in a row, and their fourth in six seasons.

Mahomes guided the Chiefs to Super Bowl glory in 2020, when they came from behind to beat the San Francisco 49ers in Miami.

'No puppets just rings' claim Kansas City fans after Chiefs coach Andy Reid responds to Raiders' Patrick Mahomes insult

They were in the biggest game again in 2023, fighting back to see off the Philadelphia Eagles.

And in February, the Chiefs sealed a magical hat-trick in Las Vegas.

Once again the 49ers were leading, but the Chiefs recovered to win 25-22 in overtime.

Mahomes threw the winning touchdown pass to Mecole Hardman.

New Chiefs backup quarterback Carson Wentz has been speaking to reporters about the similarities between the Kansas City system and the one he knew at the Eagles.

“I mean, it (has) a lot of similarities to my time in Philly (Eagles), but it’s evolved quite a bit,” Wentz said.

“The speed of this offense is second to none and is faster than any team I’ve been a part of.

"I think just the way we utilize crossers and things and really do a lot of things that Pat [Mahomes] excels at and how they come to life out here.
