The Australian field hockey player, 28, spent the night in custody but left the following morning without a fine or prosecution.

It came after his side were booted out of the Olympics in a 2-0 quarter-final loss to the Netherlands.

According to News Corp Australia, Craig was caught just 15 minutes after he left a team function.

He has now come out and spoken to the media to apologise for his actions.

Craig made a brief statement before leaving in a care provided by the Australian Olympic committee.

He said: "I'd firstly like to apologise for what has occurred over the past 24 hours.

"I made a terrible mistake and I take full responsibility for my actions.

"My actions are my own and in no way reflect the values of my family, my teammates, my friends, my sport and the Australian Olympic Committee.

"I've embarrassed you all and I'm truly sorry."

The Narcotics Brigade of Paris police were carrying out the investigation.
