Hall posted a personal-best 43.40 in the race.

The US runner defeated Great Britain's Matthew Hudson-Smith and Zambia's Muzuala Samukonga.

Hall was in fourth place as he entered the final straightaway.

The Missouri native was able to gain ground on his rivals before passing Hudson-Smith steps before the finish line.

Hall was stunned at his achievement and proceeded to perform snow angels on the track floor.

Fans were blown away by the gold-medal finish by the American.

"He's got that dog in him, what a run," one commented.

"Biggest Olympic comeback ever," a second wrote.

"That was incredible," a third added.

Hall took third in the event at last year's world championships.

He was part of the US's mixed 4x400-meter relay that won gold at that event.

Hall's 43.40 time is the fifth-fasted time in 400-meter history.

It's the United States' first gold medal in the event since LaShawn Merrit's win in the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

Noah Lyles, who won the gold in Sunday's 100-meter final, revealed his reaction to Hall's comeback victory.

He wrote, "@QuincyHall400 = (dog emoji)"

Lyles' reaction comes a month after he didn't choose Hall for the 4x400-meter relay team.

He instead picked Christopher Bailey, Michael Norman, and Rai Benjamin to compete for the U.S. in the event.

Hall can say he's now an Olympic gold medalist.

On Tuesday, Cole Hocker turned heads with his gold medal in the 1500-meter final.

Lyles achieved a 0.005-second victory over Jamaica's Kishane Thompson in the 100-meter final.

He will be hoping for his second gold medal in Thursday's 200-meter race.
