OLYMPIC champion climber Toby Roberts received a heartwarming question from his mum after claiming gold in the boulder and lead event.

The Brit, 19, realised his dream on Friday when Japanese world silver medallist and favourite Sorato Anraku slipped to confirm Roberts' triumph.

He could scarcely believe what he had achieved as he looked on in astonishment with his hands above his head.

And when he then found his mother, Marina, she was equally as startled.

Looking at his gold medal, she said: "What have you done to us, you crazy boy?!"

Marina's remark echoed the disbelief from Roberts when he reacted to his achievement.

Speaking to BBC Sport, he said: "I am just lost for words. To find out that I had got the gold in that moment was truly incredible.

"I have been training for this moment my whole life. To say it hasn't sunk in is an understatement.

"I imagine later it will be a flood of emotions. It is a goal I have been training towards for like 10 years."

Roberts' dad Tristian, who is also Toby's coach, spoke before his son's triumph about his passion for sport since he was a young boy.

He said: "He was very obsessive and wouldn’t let things drop. Whatever sport he did, he was really good at it.

"He was incredibly determined – we’d go up to his room after we’d put him to bed and he’d be doing a plank.

Olympics medals are already RUSTING as athlete posts vid of battered bronze & fan jokes ‘looks like you won it in 1982’

"We’d be like: 'You’ve got to stop training now. You’ve got school tomorrow'."

In 2016, it was announced that climbing would make its Olympic debut at Tokyo 2020.

That stirred Roberts, who was just 12 at that point, to make an eight-year plan to target Paris 2024.

Now that has culminated in a breathtaking gold medal.
