FORMER Manchester United midfielder Michael Stewart has recalled the time Sir Alex Ferguson "tore strips off" him during his days at Old Trafford.

Stewart, who now works as a pundit for the BBC, was on the books at Old Trafford for seven years between 1998 and 2005.

The 43-year-old only ever managed 14 first team appearances for the Red Devils in that time, but it didn't stop Sir Alex from making sure he was behaving in line with the team's core values.

Fergie, well known for his 'hairdryer treatments', was even keeping a keen eye on Stewart while he was away from the club on international duty.

Speaking on Premier Sports, Stewart recalled the managerial legend letting loose on him after a disciplinary mistake during a youth international match.

He said: "When you're talking about wanting the ground to open up and swallow you, there's one incident that just springs to my mind constantly where I get the fear.

"I was playing for Scotland U21s in Paisley against Northern Ireland, and it was right at the end of the game and we had battered them but it ended up being 1-1.

"We were breaking forward, the ref had given a foul which was never a foul, and I picked the ball up.

"I went to slam it on the ground, but it had been chucking it down, and as I went to slam the ball on the ground, it came flying out of my hand and smacked the ref and I got red carded."

Adding: "The next day, when I was travelling down to Manchester, I'm thinking 'that wasn't great but there won't be any problems.'

"I got into training and as soon as I pulled into the training ground, one of the guys came into the changing room and said 'the gaffer wants to speak to you.'

"I went up to his office and he just tore strips off me and he said 'if you ever think about doing something like that again, your backside will be out that door before it touches the ground.'

Man Utd hero Lee Sharpe opened up about the most unforgettable hairdryer treatment he ever received from legendary manager Sir Alex Ferguson

"He said 'you represent this club and if you think you can get away with that, there's not a chance.'

"And he also said 'don't ever think that I don't know what's going on [on international duty], cause I know everything that's going on.'"

Stewart joins a long list of stars who were scolded by Sir Alex Ferguson during his 26-year stint as boss at Old Trafford.

Stewart left United in 2005 after loans spells with Nottingham Forest and Hearts had earned him a permanent switch to Hibernian.

The four-time Scotland international later returned to Hearts on a full-time basis before finishing his career at Charlton Athletic, where he hung up his boots in 2011.
