In 2016, the quarterback began kneeling during the national anthem in protest against racial inequality and police brutality.

Three years later he reached a settlement with the NFL, having sued them alongside ex-teammate Eric Reid.

Kaepernick and Reid had accused the NFL's 32 teams of deliberately working together to keep them out of the league, due to their protests.

The former has maintained a desire to play in the NFL again, and as recently as Tuesday told Sky Sports that he is still training for a possible return.

While Kaepernick is still "pushing" to play in the league once again, he could return in a different role.

Back in January, his former coach Harbaugh reached out about a potential coaching position with the Chargers.

"Yeah, we talked a little bit about it,” the 60-year-old told USA Today.

"He’s considering it. He was out of the country. He said he was going to get back to me.

"We haven’t reconnected since then. That was early, early in the year."

Harbaugh worked with Kaepernick in San Francisco between 2011 and 2014.

Having remained close with his former QB, Harbaugh is confident that Kaepernick would thrive on his staff.

"If that was ever the path he was to take, I think that would be tremendous,” the former Michigan coach said.

"He’d be a tremendous coach, if that’s the path he chose."

Harbaugh signed up to return to the NFL earlier this year, having coached the Michigan Wolverines for the last eight.

'NOW YOU GOT TO DO IT AGAIN'

Fresh off winning a national championship last year, Harbaugh is excited to get going again in the NFL.

"Now you got to do it again,” he insisted. "Any job you do, it’d be like digging a hole.

"That’s the only job I can think of where you start on top."

Should Kaepernick accept Harbaugh's offer, he would join some of his former teammates on the Chargers' staff.
