PATRICK Mahomes was planning to combine with wide receiver Marquise "Hollywood" Brown when the 2024 NFL season kicks off.

However, those plans for Mahomes are now on hold, with wide receiver Brown suffering an injury in preseason.

Mahomes has urged that the player gets better soon as the Chiefs step up their preparations for the new campaign.

“I guess we’re lucky that it wasn’t as bad as it could have been,” Mahomes told ESPN.

“We lose a little bit of that veteran-type receiver in that room.

"We have other guys that can replace him a little bit, but to have that much talent and have a good understanding of what I want.

"Hopefully we’re getting him back sooner rather than later.

"We’ve just got to keep pushing those young [receivers] to keep getting better and better every day."

Brown has been in the NFL since 2019, initially playing for the Baltimore Ravens and Arizona Cardinals.

He joined the Chiefs in March, signing a one-year contract.

Brown could be out of action for up to six weeks with his sternoclavicular injury.

That could mean he doesn't return until Week 3 or Week 4.

The Chiefs will aim to create NFL history when the new season starts.

Andy Reid's team can become the first ever to win three successive Super Bowls.

Inspired by quarterback icon Mahomes, they came back to beat the Philadelphia Eagles in the NFL's biggest game last year.

And they followed that up with another famous triumph in February, beating the San Francisco 49ers in Las Vegas.

Mahomes is fully aware of what a stunning achievement it would be if they go all the way again.
