Ring Magazine 2019 awards announced with Ruiz Jr winning biggest upset for Anthony Joshua win and Canelo best fighter

CANELO ALVAREZ has been named Fighter of the Year in the prestigious Ring Magazine 2019 awards.

The Mexican won world titles in two divisions, middleweight and light-heavyweight to round off an incredible year.

In May he outpointed American Daniel Jacobs at middleweight to hold the WBC, WBA and IBF belts.

Then at the start of November he knocked out Sergey Kovalev to land the WBO light-heavyweight title.

He joined legendary Mexicans Erik Morales, Juan Manuel Marquez, and Jorge Arce on the list of four-weight world champions.

Canelo has recently given up the light-heavyweight title as he believes he has unfinished business at super-middleweight or middleweight.

His coach Eddy Reynoso was named Trainer of the Year.

Newly-crowned unified heavyweight champ Anthony Joshua features in three categories.

His shock KO loss to Andy Ruiz Jr back in June was named Upset of the Year.

The Brit started the fight well, and floored his Mexican opponent in the third round.

But he was then hit with a crushing right hand that scrambled his senses and left him on the canvas.

AJ never recovered from that shot, and went on to be floored three more time before the fight was waved off in the seventh and Ruiz Jr became WBO, WBA, IBF and IBO heavyweight world champ.

Unsurprisingly that action-packed third was named Round of the Year.

But Joshua went on to get his revenge earlier this month when he easily outpointed 20st Ruiz Jr in Saudi Arabia.

This was named Event of the Year.

Last month Deontay Wilder looked to be on the way to his first ever loss in his rematch against Luis Ortiz.

The Bronze Bomber was well behind on the cards before he did what he does best and delivered a stunning one punch KO of the Cuban.

The fight was waved off in the seventh and Wilder had retained his WBC heavyweight belt.

That finish also secured him the Knockout of the Year Award.

Next up will be another rematch when he takes on Tyson Fury on December 22 after their controversial 2018 draw.
