Son, 24, is unlikely to be let go by Spurs in January even though he is not a key player in Mauricio Pochettino's team.

The former Bayer Leverkusen star has still provided three assists and scored six times for Spurs this season.

It looked like Son was going to return to his former club last season - a year after leaving for White Hart Lane in a £22million deal - but Pochettino decided to keep him.

Son left his homeland in 2008 at the age of 16 and revealed how Manchester United legend Ruud van Nistelrooy helped make him a star at the German giants.

He said: “At 16, it was difficult. When I came to Hamburg, I knew no English and no German, nothing.

“But I wanted to play in Europe, this was my goal.

“I felt so alone and so humble because everyone was helping me, but it was tough.

“Sometimes I missed Korea. But I wanted to play professional football in Europe and this was what I had to do.

“When I was at Hamburg, aged 17 or 18, Ruud van Nistelrooy signed and he helped me a lot. He saw my first training session and talked to me.

“He told me I was a good player. He gave me confidence and I want to thank him.

“We had a really good team and were successful for a time.

“I was only young. I listened to him and tried to learn from what he was saying.”
