WWE legend The Great Khali now works for Indian political party BJP as 7ft 1in giant vows to help ‘country progress’

WWE cult hero The Great Khali has swapped the wrestling ring for Indian politics.

Khali - real name Dalip Singh Rana - left the promotion in April 2018 after being eliminated from The Greatest Royal Rumble match.

The seven-foot giant has kept a relatively low profile since his 12-year run with the WWE came to an end.

But he's now turned his attention to national politics by joining India's Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

After joining the BJP - the party of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi - Khali said: "I have wrestled all over the world.

"If I just loved money and fame, then I would have stayed in the United States and in the WWE.

"However, I have always loved my country.

"I was also impressed by all the work done by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

"So I told myself that even I should join him and help the country progress. I am a fan of his hard work and thinking."

Wrestling fans were quick to comment on Khali's dive into politics, with one saying: "Congratulations."

Another said: "Now BJP is officially Khali mind."

BJP National General Secretary Vinod Tawde also took to Twitter to reflect on Khali's joining of the party.

He wrote: "I warm-heartedly welcome Shri Dalip Singh Rana ‘The Great Khali’ to BJP.

"His inspiration is drawn by Modi Ji’s vision for a new India and his willingness to work for nation's growth is the guiding principle of BJP."

One WWE fan in India, however, was far from happy with the move, saying: "BJP is desperate to take in anybody famous without looking at his credentials.

"Wonder when will India get a Genuine Political Party."

One-time WWE world heavyweight champion Khali was inducted into the promotion's hall-of-fame last year.
