Who was Bruce Sutter?

OVER the course of his long career, late baseball star Bruce Sutter accomplished several milestones.

Prior to his death, Bruce played for a number of Major League Baseball teams.

Who was Bruce Sutter?

Born on January 8, 1953, Bruce Sutter was an American MLB athlete from Lancaster, Pennsylvania.

In May 1976, Bruce was drafted as a pitcher for the Chicago Cubs.

On September 8, 1977, he became the 19th pitcher in MLB history to achieve an immaculate inning by striking out three batters in just nine pitches during only one inning.

In December 1980, the star pitcher was traded to the St Louis Cardinals.

By the time he began playing for the Cardinals, Bruce was already a four-time All-Star and earned the status again in 1981.

At the 1982 World Series, Bruce and the Cardinals defeated the Milwaukee Brewers and took home that year's championship.

In December 1984, the pro baseballer was traded to the Atlanta Braves.

He played for the Braves until a series of health complications resulted in his retirement.

On September 9, 1988, he pitched his last game for the Braves before undergoing arthroscopic surgery on his right knee later that month.

When did Bruce retire?

In March 1989, Bruce suffered a severely torn rotator cuff that put him on the season's disabled list.

In November of that year, the Braves released him from his contract and he retired.

At the time, he retired with the third-highest career saves in MLB history.

At his time of death, he ranked in 31st place as New York Yankees alum Mariano Rivera and San Diego Padres star Trevor Hoffman occupy the top two spots, respectively.

On January 10, 2006, Bruce was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame.

When did Bruce die?

On October 13, 2022, Bruce passed away and his death was announced on Friday, October 14.

On Twitter, the Cardinals mourned their late star pitcher and stated: "We are saddened over the passing of Bruce Sutter.
