Racing tragedy as popular Captain Tom Cat unable to be saved by last-minute surgery

RACING has rallied around Deva Racing after the popular Captain Tom Cat was unable to be saved during surgery.

The eight-year-old, trained by Richard Newland, suffered a heavy fall at Market Rasen on Sunday.

There was immediate concern after such a heavy tumble and although he was reportedly up and okay straight after, he had actually ruptured his tendon.

Deva Racing said on Twitter afterwards: "Captain Tom Cat has unfortunately ruptured his tendon from his fall at Market Rasen.

"He will travel to Rase Veterinary hospital for further treatment. He’s our star and we will do everything we can to save him."

Captain Tom Cat underwent last-minute surgery in an attempt to save his life but it unfortunately wasn't enough.

Deva Racing said: "We are sad to report that we couldn’t save Captain Tom Cat whilst in surgery.

"He was a really special horse for us. He was loved and adored by all of his owners and everyone associated with him.

"We would like to thank Rase Veterinary for all their hard work."

Captain Tom Cat won seven of his 25 races, including victories at Cheltenham and Aintree.

He was a Graded winner at his peak, making all the running to win the Grade 2 Rising Stars Novices' Chase at Wincanton in 2021.

Although that would be his last victory, he ran many other races of note, including three more placed efforts.

His owner Deva Racing is a well-known syndicate who have enjoyed plenty of success in racing.

In total, they've had 61 winners on the Flat and 107 over jumps, with prize money of £441,689 and £627,388 respectively.

Some of their horses include Royal Mews, who was placed in Group 3 company at Meydan earlier this year, and Mountbatten, an improving younger horse with Archie Watson.

The likes of Nicky Henderson, Paul Nicholls, Charlie Johnston and Fergal O'Brien have also trained their horses.
