In October 2023, the International Olympic Committee announced the addition of five sports to the 2028 Olympics.

Baseball/softball, cricket, and lacrosse will be making a return alongside the addition of flag football and squash, which will be making their Olympics debut.

In a statement, IOC President Thomas Bach said that these five sports are "in line with the American sports culture and will showcase iconic American sports to the world, while bringing international sports to the United States."

Baseball and softball were first introduced during the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, which were held in 2021 because of the Covid-19 pandemic, however, they were removed from the 2024 Paris Olympics.
