On October 23, 2023, the Jets announced that Rick would be taking a leave of absence.

In a statement, the team said that the decision was made after Judy suffered a seizure.
Judy was taken to a local hospital and is "undergoing further testing," the team said.
"Sunday evening, Judy Borness, wife of Winnipeg Jets head coach Rick Bowness suffered a seizure and is currently in [the] hospital undergoing further testing," the statement read.
"As a result, Rick is taking a leave of absence from the hockey club."

At this time, it is not known when Rick will return to the bench, but the team did say that associate coach Scott Arniel will be serving as the interim head coach.
"We ask everyone to respect the family's privacy at this time," the statement added.
Rick has been the head coach of the Jets since July 2022. He replaced then-interim coach Dave Lowry after stints with the Dallas Stars, Tampa Bay Lightning, and New York Islanders.
In his first year, the team went 46-33-3 but lost in the first round of the playoffs to eventual Stanley Cup champion Golden Knights.
Do Rick and Judy have children?
Since tying the knot, Rick and Judy have welcomed three children, two sons and a daughter.
Like their mother, the Bowness kids often stay out of the spotlight, however, they have not shied away from their hockey roots.
Rick's daughter, Kristen, works for the Nashville Predators as the director of amateur hockey and fan development while his son, Ryan, serves as the assistant general manager of the Ottawa Senators.
Ryan joined the Senators in July 2022 after spending six years as a scout for the Pittsburgh Penguins.
"Growing up the way we did around the NHL, with him coaching, it’s all I knew," Ryan recalled during an interview with the Ottawa Sun.

"It’s not that I took it for granted, it’s just that when you’re a kid, you don’t know any different. I had my playing career, I played for four years in the OHL, I got drafted (by the Columbus Blue Jackets in 2001) and you kind of make your own path. And then it’s all I ever wanted to do because it’s all I ever knew. I’m fortunate every day to be able to do what I do."
