Wolves 1 Sheffield Utd 1: Doherty salvages point after Mousset’s opener as Blades battle to another impressive draw

MATT DOHERTY rescued a point for Wolves - then dedicated the goal to ‘heartbroken’ former team-mate Benik Afobe.

Wolves’ players wore black armbands as a mark of respect for Afobe who played at Molineux before signing for Stoke City earlier this year.

Doherty headed a 64th minute equaliser then took his armband off and kissed it in memory of Afobe’s two-year-old daughter Amora who died on Friday after developing a severe infection.

The result kept Sheffield United’s unbeaten away record intact and they took the lead just 63 seconds into the game through in-form Lys Mousset.

Chris Wilder’s side could have added to their total and were made to pay for some missed chances when Doherty netted.

But Blades stood firm to collect a point.

United went ahead in the second minute of the game when they caught Wolves napping.

Nuno’s side could have been shaking off their midweek trip to Portugal when they qualified for the last 32 of the Europa League with a draw in Braga.

But they were still asleep and Wilder’s men took full advatage.

George Baldock’s cross was missed by Conor Coady and Max Kilman who both went for the same ball.

Mousset then had time to control the ball and pick his spot for his fourth goal in six games - and fifth of the season.

RESURGENT WOLVES

United could have added to that before Wolves slowly came back into it.

Returning Blades keeper Dean Henderson pulled off a superb save from Raul Jimenenz’s header as the Mexican looked certain to equalise.

But United were defending well and soaking up most of what Wolves could throw at them.

They should have added a second before the break when Mousset set up John Fleck but keeper Rui Patricio kept his effort out.

And Patricio had to be alert straight after half-time when Blades threatened to catch Wolves by surprise again - this time the Portuguese saved from David McGoldrick.

Wolves broke on the hour when Diogo Jota ran into a wall of defenders but failed to win a free-kick with Jimenez unmarked to his left.

But United’s resistance ended after 64 minutes when Jimenez won the ball on the right and crossed for Doherty at the far post and the wing-back headed home ion second goal in as many games from close range.

Wilder’s team were not finished yet through and McGoldrick rose highest to head a Oliver Norwood free-kick just wide.
