Soumare, 20, caught the eye in Lille's second-place finish in Ligue 1 last season and a number of clubs across Europe are said to be looking into his signature.

Lille president Gerard Lopez said: "It is true that there is a lot of interest from Spain, from Italy.

"The interest of Jose Mourinho? I know he likes him very much, yes.

"There are five or six clubs that are interested in him so we will see."

The box-to-box midfielder will be well known to the Mourinho's Spurs assistant Joao Sacramento, who worked with the Frenchman at Les Dogues before his own move across the Channel last month.

Soumare is one of a number of midseason targets for Man United, while Napoli are thought to have opened talks this week and Real Madrid and Valencia are also interested.

Wolves were among those enquiring about him in the summer but dropped out of the conversation after failing to convince the youngster.

Lille would demand anywhere between £40 and £50 million to part with a player whose contract won't expire until summer 2022.

They would, however, hope to see Soumare return on loan for the remainder of the campaign but are confident they have ample cover should he leave for good in January.

The Senegalese-born France under-21 international featured in all six of Lille's Champions League group stage games this season, including home and away losses to Chelsea, as Lille finished bottom of Group H.

Soumare signed for Lille in 2017 having spent his youth career at PSG and has made 22 appearances so far this term.
