ARSENAL have agreed a three-and-a-half-year deal for Mikel Arteta to take over as the new manager, according to reports.

It is understood the deal is almost completed and the Spaniard is now set to be confirmed as compatriot Unai Emery's successor.

According to Football London, the final paperwork is being processed by lawyers.

But it is still unclear when the announcement will be made, although it could be within the next day or two.

Emery was sacked at the end of November following a run of seven games without a win with Freddie Ljungberg taking over as interim coach for five games, winning one.

As revealed by SunSport, Arteta spent Tuesday afternoon thrashing out a deal with the Gunners.

The Spaniard spent hours in talks with the club, where he had further discussions with their hierarchy.

It is understood he laid out plans on how he sees the future of the club and what direction he wants to take them in.

The 37-year-old had permission from Manchester City, who are happy to let him achieve his dream of being a manager.

Arteta was told what has changed since he left Arsenal back in 2016, and the direction of the club.

The City assistant manager is expected to take the job and ironically his first game looks set to be an away trip to his former club Everton this weekend.

That clash at Goodison Park on Saturday is also likely to see Carlo Ancelotti's make his bow as Toffees boss.

Ex-Rangers star Arteta was at training with City on Tuesday before heading off in the afternoon.

It is not known whether or not he flew down with Pep Guardiola and Co to face Oxford.
