Juventus legend Gianluigi Buffon set to equal Paolo Maldini’s record of 647 Serie A appearances
GIANLUIGI BUFFON equalled the Serie A appearance record of 647 when the Juventus keeper added to his list of amazing landmark stats at Sampdoria tonight.
The 176-cap Italy legend, 41, had already passed Paolo Maldini for the overall number of games played - and now he has caught the ex-Azzurri defender up again.
After his surprise return from PSG in the summer, Buffon revealed his failure so far to lift the Champions League has driven him on to keep playing.
The 2006 World Cup winner told Goal "For me it's a huge stimulus and I have to thank life for not letting me win it yet, otherwise I would ask myself why I still play.
“It is great to be still in the running and try again.

"But there is no agreement on playing at least one game in Europe in the season, we are at Juventus and not in an amateur club, I play when I am called in by the coach.”
Buffon won Serie A 11 times in his first stint at Juventus,
He also won the Italian Cup four times, adding to the one occasion he lifted it with his first club Parma.
The closest Buffon has come to triumphing in the Champions League was final appearances for Juve in 2015 and 2018, losing to Barcelona and Real Madrid respectively.
