Bayern Munich REJECT Arsene Wenger after talks break down between ex-Arsenal boss and Bundesliga club’s president

BAYERN MUNICH have turned down the opportunity to appoint Arsene Wenger as their new manager.

The German champions held talks with the former Arsenal boss following the sacking of Niko Kovac earlier this week.

Wenger, 70, was believed to be the front-runner and called club president Karl-Heinz Rummenigge to express his desire to take over at the Allianz.

But it appears Bayern have rejected his advances and opportunity to step back into work because they could not agree on a length of contract.

Wenger wanted a long-term deal but Bayern were keen on offering him a contract until the end of the season before assessing whether to appoint a more youthful boss.

It was believed he called Rummenigge on Wednesday afternoon to signal his interest in coaching Bayern.

The Frenchman has been without work since leaving his post at the Gunners in the summer of 2018.

Wenger, who speaks fluent German, believed he would fit the bill for the vacant position.

Bayern's decision to pursue other targets also rules out a sensational reunion between Wenger and old rivals Tottenham in the Champions League next month.

He has been offered a technical role by Fifa but has expressed his desire to step back into the dugout should the right position become available.

Bayern are currently fourth in the Bundesliga with five wins from their opening 10 matches.

Hans Flick, current interim head coach, is in line to be handed the permanent position while Jose Mourinho is also in the running.
