BMW wants to put a fan-favourite game in your car

A digital version of a classic card game is coming to half a million cars

VIDEO games are everywhere these days, from your phone and video game consoles to TVs and even calculators.

If you want to play games on the go, you could pick up a Nintendo Switch or a Steam Deck, or just stick with your phone, but there are other options.

With the increase of fancy entertainment systems in modern cars, many developers have been getting into the business of putting their games in cars.

Now, a company called AirConsole is teaming up with BMW to put a digital version of one of the best selling card games ever in hundreds of thousands of cars.

AirConsole and BMW have announced that next week at Gamescom, the two will be showing off a new game called UNO Car Party.

As you might expect, UNO Car Party will allow you to play UNO in your car, and the companies say it will be available in over half a million BMW and Mini vehicles.

More on upcoming games

The way the game works is pretty simple — the face-up card pile will be displayed on the car’s entertainment system, while up to four players see their cards on their phones.

The game is all synced up with AirConsole’s “unique game controller system,” which lets players interact with the game from their own devices, rather than needing specific controllers or having to touch the screen in the car.

If this all sounds a bit dangerous, don’t worry — the game won’t work unless the car is parked and stationary.

The idea is that families or friends could play a game or two of UNO while stopped for lunch on a road trip, or while waiting for their electric car to charge.

Erika Winterholler, the head of business development and digital gaming at Mattel, said that Uno is the best possible game for in-car gaming.

She said: “Uno is perfect for in-car gaming because it’s highly engaging and brings people together.

“Its simple rules are easy to learn and endlessly captivating, making it ideal for both short pit stops and extended play sessions.”

UNO Car Play will start rolling out in BMW and Mini vehicles starting on August 21, 2024.
