What is 'raw-dogging'?

Raw-dogging is a new viral trend which is taking the world of social media by storm.

It's when people are travelling on a plane and not allowing themselves any entertainment for the whole journey.

This means they can't scroll on their phones, watch TV or even read a book.

It also means they aren't allowed to have a nap in the air either.

Some participants are even going without food and water.

Those taking part in the trend will share photos and videos of themselves while they aren't allowed any entertainement.

However, of course there is no evidence that they are carrying out the challenge for their entire flight.

For example, one clip went viral where a man said he was "raw-dogging a 17 hour flight" when it was clear he was on a Ryanair flight but the airline don't fly that far.

Why are people 'raw-dogging' on planes?

Will so much in-flight entertainment available while on a plane now, you might wonder why someone would challenge themselves to sit in silence.

However, this is the exact reason why some want to try and go without.

LBC reported that Psychologist Danielle Haig said the trend indicates "a collective yearning for balance as people seek to reclaim their mental space and foster a deeper connection with their inner selves".

However, some are saying that raw-dogging on planes is unsafe due to some people not even allowing themselves to eat or go to the toilet.

It's also unsafe to not allow yourself to go to sleep as this can lead to extreme fatigue.

Dr Gill Jenkins told the BBC: "A digital detox might do you some good, but all the rest of it is against medical advice.

"The whole thing about the risk of long-haul flying is that you're at risk of dehydration.

"If you're not moving you're at risk of deep vein thrombosis, which is compounded by dehydration.

"Not going to the toilet, that's a bit stupid. If you need the loo, you need the loo."

Where did the trend start?

The raw-dogging trend started around May 2024 and has been popular with travellers ever since.

GQ reported that the trend first began when a TikTok star from London shared a video saying he went on a seven hour flight with no entertainment and just watched the map on the TV instead.

He also shared the caption: "Anyone else bareback flights?"

This sparked a trend and now thousands of people have shared their own videos taking on the challenge.
